It was the standard exterior trim of that era across the whole southeast: wood fibre and resin compressed into a board, factory primed, dimensionally perfect, considerably cheaper than cedar and much faster to hang.
It also has a defect that only shows up on a fifteen-year timescale, which is why millions of houses got it before anyone noticed. Hardboard is only as waterproof as the coating on it. Once the paint film cracks, and it always cracks first at butt joints, at nail heads and along the bottom edge, the exposed fibre wicks water. The board swells from the inside, the layers separate, and what was a flat board turns into something with the texture of a wet paperback.
**Recognising it is easy once you know the signs.** Look at the bottom edge of a trim board at eye level. Hardboard failure looks like swelling and furring along that edge, often with the paint still intact on the face above it. Look at a butt joint between two boards: hardboard opens up and mushrooms at the joint rather than simply cracking. And press it. Failed hardboard is spongy in a way that rotten pine is not; it feels like dense cardboard because that is roughly what it is.
This was litigated. A nationwide class action covered hardboard siding manufactured between 1980 and 1998 and ran through 2008, and the courts agreed the product was defective. That settlement is long closed, so there is no claim to make now. It is worth knowing only because it tells you this is a known product failure rather than something you neglected.
The practical question is what to put back. Matching hardboard is available, cheapest, and perfectly reasonable if every face gets primed and the house gets painted on a sensible cycle. Fiber cement trim costs more, holds paint two to three times longer, and will not wick water at a cut edge, which is why most crews around here now recommend it by default. PVC trim is the premium answer for the specific runs that stay wet, such as a low rake board over a deck.
**Do not mix and match on one elevation.** Hardboard and fiber cement hold paint differently and move differently with temperature, so an elevation done half in one and half in the other will show the seam within two summers. If a run is going, take the run. The extra material is cheap next to the labour of getting up there twice.
Cost-wise this is usually the largest roofline job available on a house of this era, because hardboard rarely fails in one place. If the south-facing fascia has gone, the rake boards and the corner trim on the same elevation are typically at the same stage and simply have not been looked at. Getting a quote for the whole elevation rather than the one visible board usually costs less per foot and is the honest scope.
One genuinely useful thing you can do yourself: walk the house in good light with a screwdriver and probe the bottom edge of every trim board you can safely reach, marking the soft spots with chalk. Ten minutes of that turns a vague quote into a specific one and makes it much harder for anyone to inflate the scope.
